Orissa suffered 50th defeat in Ranji Trophy, going down to Bihar by an innings and 66 runs on the last day of their three-day East Zone match at Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur today. The 50th defeat, which include 26 by innings margin, occurred in their 73rd Ranji Trophy match since December 1949.
Against Bihar, this was Orissa’s 20th defeat and eight by an innings in 24 Ranji Trophy matches. Put into bat, host Bihar declared their first innings at 344 for nine with Hari Gidwani, Anil Bharadwaj and Ramesh Saxena hitting a half-century each. Harmohan Praharaj was most successful Orissa bowlier, taking three wickets for 56 runs.
In reply, Orissa compiled 187, which included a half-century by opening batsman Rabi Narayan Panda and 30 by M Sukheja. Forced to follow on after conceding a first-innings lead of 157 runs, Orissa were bundled out for 91 in the second essay.
Bikram Mohanty was only Orissa batstman to reach double digits in the second innings. He scored 26 runs, while Orissa gained 24 runs as penalties against the home team for slow over rate. Middle-order batsman M Sukheja and pace bowler Randhir Singh made first-class debut for Orissa in this match.
